Luris Mulla is a South Sudanese British young leader. Her leadership skills began to flourish at the University of Leicester, where she successfully led a dynamic team as President of the African and Caribbean society while studying for a degree in Law. Luris first returned to South Sudan in late 2004, she visited the town of Rumbek during her ‘year out’ from University. 

In 2006, Luris moved to Juba, the Capital of then Southern Sudan, and she began her career as the youngest judge appointed by presidential decree. Her move coincided with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005 between the North and South Sudan, ending 23 years of civil war; also known as Africa’s longest civil war. 

In 2009, she stepped down from her position to tell the narrative of her people through documentaries: The Divine Mind and Transformative Autonomy, which focuses on Sudanese history and politics. 

Luris decided to move away from the confines of the courtroom and speak out on sociopolitical issues that were affecting Sudan at the time, and to contribute to its development. Film making then became a tool she would use to convey her message.

In 2012, she went on to be recognised as a Young Leader by FES ( Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung), a German political foundation based in Juba, to represent the youth of South Sudan. This is where she began working on national issues affecting the youth with other regional leaders.

These experiences lead Luris to want to represent South Sudanese youth at a national level in South Sudan. After conflict erupted in Juba 2013, she moved to Nairobi, Kenya, to participate in conflict resolution becoming a civil society delegate representing youth at the on going IGAD led South Sudan Peace talks in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She is dedicated to implementing a meaningful political ideology and sustainable peace within South Sudan.

In 2016, She was awarded the Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship programme of President Barack Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Here, she met with other Young African Leaders from Sub Saharan Africa and was able to   secure a strong network of future Leaders of Africa.

Luris is now based in London, United Kingdom  where she works as a Strategic Advisor and Business Entrepreneur.
